About Pinewood Springs

pinewoodsprings.jpg

. . . .a quiet and peaceful mountain hamlet.

Pinewood Springs, an unincorporated mountain community in the Rocky Mountains. It is surrounded by thousands of acres of Roosevelt National Forest.  The National Forest offers many hiking trails, biking trails and hunting opportunities.  Mountain biking is quite popular.  Pinewood Springs is located along Colorado State Highway 36 between Lyons Colorado and Estes Park Colorado. It is 12 miles from Estes Park and 8 miles from Lyons. Its +/-320 homes are provided water by Pinewood Springs Water District  which has a full time water superintendent.  Electricity is provided by Poudre Valley Rural Electric Association and heating gas by local, regular propane delivery. We have 2 propane co-ops you can join ($25/year) to keep rates low. There is DSL high speed internet service available through Qwest phone company, and faster, wide band internet service with Sky Beam (connected to a T-1 line). The Pinewood Springs Property Association has a $25 per year membership fee and meets to discuss projects to improve the community. We have a new Pinewood Springs sign (top of the page), new street signs, a volley ball court and a picnic/bar-B-Q area, courtesy of the property association.  Membership is appreciated not required. There is a volunteer fire department and an emergency medical response team.  A volunteer road board augments Larimer County maintenance of roads and snow plowing.

Villa Tatra, a local gourmet restaurant, also produces wonderful smoked salmon and trout. Hours are frequent...I usually call a few days ahead and see what the schedule is.  The restuaranteurs are from eastern Europe and have an interesting store in the establishment filled with hand-crafts, pitures and even some amber jewelry from the "old country".  The local French Restaurant is now closed and is available for sale.

The entire area is a wildlife corridor for elk, deer, coyote, smaller animals and the occasional bear.  The surrounding National Forest is designated "Area 20", the most prolific elk hunting and deer hunting area in Colorado.  Of course hunting, whether its bow hunting or rifle hunting, must be done a safe distance from residential areas and the hunters are very careful to follow the rules...hunting safely and responsibly.

Just 20 to 30 minutes away is all the big traditional shopping and malls in the neighboring towns of Longmont and Boulder.  One hour away is Denver and Denver International Airport.  It is convenient to have a "4 professional sports Team" city and a major airport so close.  Going 15 minutes west along Highway 36, you will find Estes Park, Colorado, Rocky Mountain National Park and the continental divide.  Estes Park has 8000 permanent residents and offers several good restaurants, a super market, movie theaters, a robust art community, 2 golf courses, cross country skiing and of course more hiking and wild life.  Be careful of the elk jams that materialize on the local roads.  Just 8 miles down the road to Lyons, you can enjoy tow or three music festivals during the summer months.

The Little Thompson River runs through, Pinewood Springs, formerly known as Little Elk Meadows, and provides us with water almost year around.  Pinewood Springs has just completed a +/-12,000,000 gallon water reservoir to secure the future water supply for the 320 homes there. Water is an important resource in Colorado and it will become more and more important as the years go by. Our little river also offers what i locally called the "Indian Tubs".  They are large pools in the river that were hewn out of granite over the millenia.  Local residents can be found there in the hot summer months bathing in the tubs or sunning themselves on the flat rocks jsut above.
